According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2007 is supposed to be the Year of the Pig, but for those of us in the world of fashion, 2007 is the year of Kate Moss.
Moss leaped onto the fashion scene in the mid-90’s after being discovered at JFK Airport while returning from a holiday in the Bahamas at age 14. She quickly landed cover after cover (over 300 to date!) and became known as the "anti-supermodel" because she was only 5’6’’ and very svelte—which at the time stood in stark contrast to the curvaceous and tall top models like Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer. Her 1993 ad campaign for Calvin Klein is noted as a major turning point in fashion for ushering a trend toward the "waif" look that Moss was famous for.
After a few slower-than-average years for the supermodel, Kate is back and better than ever! Moss landed no fewer than 18 top modeling contracts for the Fall/Winter 2006 cycle. She’ll be featured working with the likes of Dior, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein Jeans, Versace, Roberto Cavalli, and Burberry to name a few. Outside of the fashion industry, she’ll be at the center of marketing efforts for Virgin Mobile and camera maker Nikon.
In addition to a slew of magazine covers and ad campaigns, Moss will also be launching two new endeavors this year. Kate will foray into the world of fashion design for the first time, teaming with Katy England to create a line of clothing for the UK fashion chain Topshop. The collection launches in April. Her second project will be designing a new fragrance that’s rumored to share her name. Moss is working with the world’s largest fragrance company, Coty Inc., which boasts over $2.9 billion in annual sales marketing leading brands like Kenneth Cole, Chloe, Calvin Klein, and Marc Jacobs in over 91 global markets. Kate will be part of the company’s celebrity brands line, joining the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Sarah Jessica Parker.
All these plans and the year's not over yet! Look out for evening more of the UK’s hottest supermodel as 2007 unfolds.
